I picked Summy up a little while ago from daycare and I was asked about her eating habits. I was specifically asked if she eats in a dark corner, kinda funny/kinda scary huh?

Anyway, at dinner time Summy decided to shove her mouth full of food (like she normally does) and then paw at the kitchen door at school. There was a new person on duty at mealtime today and she hadn't been trained by little Ms. Summy...it turns out that this 4 legged princess has a particular spot about where she eats and it's behind a door in a dark corner at school.

It's a good thing we're not real parents.

Food Review: Brasserie Beck

We headed over to the old McPherson Square neighborhood to try out the new (to us) Brasserie Beck.
We met up with some friends who during our last group dinner outing noticed Jeremy's excitement over the mussels at Bistrot du Coin. They promised they could recommend even better Mussels, and so we went out Wednesday for the test.
With 4 orders of Mussels, they covered the 3 options (White wine and spices, Apple and Curry, Fennel and Chorizo) and doubled up on the white wine option. The clear winner was the snausage (as we would refer to it) variety. I was enticed by the special salad of the evening (Asparagus and tomatoes covered in something yummy) and the hot pastry: Quiche.
All our portions were actually pretty huge, and the beer menu resembled the endless choices at Brickskeller. Yummy! The dessert Waffle du Jour included apricots marinated in Hoegaarden beer (a Doggpound visitor's favorite), but we were simply too full to indulge. Next time! Overall, a thumbs up experience!

Paula, no matter what any ME department tells you, congrats! Congrats Pulita, you did it...you really did it! You showed CP (and SLO) who's the boss, even if Jack pooped in your lab (I keeeed, I keeed)! It definitely wasn't easy, and I'm so so proud of you!

You've come a long long way--from Kansas really. My first memory that summarizes the Paula of yesteryear was when our matching bedroom furniture was delivered (Camila was too young to qualify for it) and one set had a scratch on the hutch. I cried and screamed to no end about how ruined my new room was. You, being the cool cucumber that you are, shrugged your shoulders and told mom and dad we could switch. The scratch was nothing to you, and seeing me upset was worse. There's video of me opening your 22 Barbies at your 5th birthday, typical me, typical you. Me trying to help, convincing myself I was being helpful, taking 27 years to realize I was being controlling and not so nice. It took you these past 23.5 years of your life to finally understand that I had the best intentions...from the days of winnie the pooh and the big yellow teeth, I really just didn't know how to show you I cared about you.

I've given you quite the adventure of tough love over the past 10 years, but I knew you could take it. You were my IM-ing best friend when I needed it most during college, and despite the rougher stages in our communication, we found a way to make it work (IM, who knew?). You graduated from Pres, went on to become an engineer at CP, and even though you said I was your inspiration, I put that idea back in your court and say you were your own inspiration, and you blew any inspiration I might have given you outta the water.

You became ESC president and leader extraordinare in so many ways. You joined a sorority, became house manager up on the hill, and managed to get the offer I patiently waited for and never got from the internet behometh. You raised a fun-loving doggie/son and kept a smile on your face through it all. You excelled beyond your wildest dreams, and always with a smile on your face. You fell down, and got up in your pink heels, tossed your hair aside, and really showed everyone that you would have the last laugh.

I'm so proud of you. I can't wait to watch you settle into your grown up life. Viva Argentina y Brasil! Congratulations Paula, it's your moment...cherish it!

Cirque du Soleil comes to DC

Wahoo, I'm so excited to make it to another Cirque show. The last one I went to was a few winters ago in SF, and the closest thing after that was Corteo (horseys!) the day (can you believe that?) that we got Summy.

It's been a solid 3 years since I've been to a Cirque du Soleil show and I'm so excited I could just burst. This show will be at the new National Harbor in MD, so we'll get a chance to check out this new site as well. Show is not until November, so we've got a while to go--we're talking post-marathon here, woah!

"Kooza tells the story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner in search of his place in the world.

KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil: It combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.

The Innocent's journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster, the Pickpocket, and the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog.

I opened my big mouth and spoiled Jeremy's bday gift a whooping 3 months early. Ugh, I suck.

But in my defense, it's just too exciting to keep quiet about. You see, I love tennis (I used to be decent at the sport, we're talking high school so that was eons ago) and watching tourneys has sort of been our thing from the early days when I didn't even live in DC. I have fond memories of the Legg Mason classic (for the 2 years that we went) but then this whole August wedding and August anniversary trip pattern got in the way :P

Fast forward to us trying to get some US Open tickets last year, and ya well that didn't pan out. So this year I used my Amex member invitation to purchase them before they were open to the public. We're headed to the US Open this year, and on the finals weekend (well it's the Women's semis and Men's doubles finals) :) Maybe next year we'll finally make it to a big final round match. All I know is I can remember the days of Livermore Tennis Club (when I was playing 12 & under tourneys) and my "dream" of all time was to make it out to watch the US Open. Check, yeah!

For more than thirty years, the American photographer Richard Misrach (b. 1949) has made provocative work that addresses contemporary society's relationship to nature, especially the American West. Since 2001, he has made a series of large scale (six by ten feet), lushly colored photographs of swimmers and sunbathers in Hawaii. Looking down from a hotel room directly adjacent to the beach, he has eliminated all references to the horizon and sky to record people immersed in the idyllic environment. Yet, despite the beauty of the scene, a strange sense of disquietude pervades these photographs. Made in the days immediately after September 11, 2001, these photographs speak of the unease and sense of foreboding that pervaded the country after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The title of the series, On the Beach, is drawn from Nevil Shute's cold war novel about nuclear holocaust. This exhibition will present 19 of these photographs.

Organization: This exhibition was initiated by The Art Institute of Chicago.

I went to an all-girls high school, so maybe it stems from those days…but I have a steady love/hate for things that single out women (for the better or worse). That being said I’m still a sucker for all things pink and pro-women career items (enter love, bubye hate).

Before the first of many psychotic hurricane-like storms this week, we strolled over to Gtown’s Barnes & Noble (Summy in tow, of course). With career planning and decision making on the brain, and with graduation season in full swing, I failed to skip over the kick your career into high gear table. I actually browsed over a good 5 or so books, and picked up the one with the cheesiest cover as a keeper. Yes, I hide the cover as I read it on the metro, but this is definitely a case of “don’t judge a book by its cover” (or title).

The Girl’s Guide to Kicking Your Career Into Gear was supposed to be part of P’s graduation gift for next week. Unfortunately (for her), I started flipping through it and before I knew it I was tabbing and highlighting portions like mad. Maybe it will become one of those books you’re supposed to pass on with love. Along with 4-hour Work Week, I’m starring this is a must read for all (ladies).

I love the vibe of the home decor offered at Apartment Zero in NW (406 7th St NW to be exact). I was perusing my Express this morning and came across the results of the Small Space Big Style Studio Design challenge.

The work done by Douglas Burton is just awesome! (click on pg 49) The other 2 entries were also wonderfully done, but Burton's version just makes me want to take a seat on that lounger and relax. I've had it on my grand to-do list to reach out to some interior decorators to maximize our space and bring a more zen and spacious feeling to the teeny doggpound. This morning's article might have been just the last nudge I needed to finally call someone. Now let's hope that I can get somewhere on the ::cough cough no budget:: that we've got for this :P

Welcome to the third shelf of the Doggpound cupboard. Here you'll find a plethora of gluten-free tasty snacks. Our current favorites include: Larabars, KIND bars, and Think bars...and the not so gluten free Apex Hershey's Protein Brownies.

I can't rave enough about the taste, texture, nutrition facts (a little more fat--a la 10grams avg--than I'm used to, but so what) and gluten-free concept. Maybe it's a trend, as I just read about the Gluten-free revolution in this morning's Express (pg33), yes I know it's for those who suffer from Celiac disease, but I'm all about how great I feel post-gluten free indulgences. I'm a true believer in what my mom's best friend shared with me something like 8 years ago, the belief that we're all allergic to processed flours and sugars to some degree or another. All I know is that anytime I step back from that nasty white flours and sugars, I feel a million times better. I love it, Gluten Free Gluttony!

Almond-Coconut Tart
Serves 8
For the crust:
2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 large egg whites
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt

For the filling:
1/2 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise
1/2 cup vanilla soy milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large egg yolks
2 teaspoons arrowroot or cornstarch
2 tablespoons almond paste
1 cup almond flour
1/2 cup soy cream cheese, preferably Tofutti
5 tablespoons apricot jam
4 cups assorted berries

1. Make the crust: Preheat oven to 350*. Coat a 9-inch fluted tart pan with cooking spray. Combine remaining ingredients. Press into bottom and up sides of pan.
2. Make the filling: Scrape vanilla seeds into a small saucepan, and add pod. Stir in soy milk and 2 tablespoons sugar, and bring to a boil. Whisk yolks, arrowroot or cornstarch, and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar in a bowl. Add hot soy milk in a slow, steady stream, whisking until combined. Return to pan, and whisk over medium heat until thickened, about 2 minutes. Discard vanilla pod.
3. Beat milk mixture and almond paste with a mixer on medium speed for 5 minutes. Beat in almond flour and cream cheese. Spread into tart crust. Bake for 15 minutes. Cover edges with parchment paper, then foil. Bake until set, 15 to 25 minutes more. Let cool completely in pan on a rack. Unmold. Spread jam evenly over the tart. Arrange berries on top.
EAT!

It looks like my 1.5 year old Nike plus sensor is slowly kicking the bucket. It acknowledges my running data during and shortly after a run. But then that little stinker reverts to making my runs save as 1 minute endeavors, typically with a pace of oh I don't know let's say 116 minutes/mile. Awesome! Could you imagine me moving that slowly doing anything? ever? ha!

No fear, the UPS man has my new Nike plus sensor (did you know you could buy just the sensor? awesome!), the receiver on my nano is hopefully *not* the problem. If that doesn't work, I got extra back-up:

Restaurant Rave: Giovanni's Trattu

A few weeks late in publishing but...
Wow, yum, amazing, delicious!

During the birthday week celebrations, we had an absolutely tasty dinner at Giovanni's Trattu over on Jefferson Place ( just a block south of N St and West of Connecticut, around the SE corner of the Palm Restaurant).

It's a cute little restaurant in an English basement, tucked away. If not for yelp reviews, I really would not have ever noticed this place. Especially given the fact that in our 2+ years of being in the neighborhood, and walking by this on the way home from some Conn Ave rowdiness, I can't say I ever remember noticing that this place even existed.

We skipped the appetizers, opting for some indulgent entrees instead. J feasted on some Stufatino di Coniglio (Rabbit stew--is that even Italian?), mom & I went for the homemade Gnocchi di Patate della Nonna, and dad opted for the Filetto di Salmone alla erbe(?--in my 27 yr old age, I can't remember anymore). We shared some fabulous red wine, and then went over the top with an amazing Tiramiusu-like (but not so much that it would displease a coffee hater) decadence and some old Porto.

This restaurant really is a gem. Very quaint, not very many people dining on a weekend evening. The service was great, but the food was just over the top delicious! I really think Al Tiramisu has slipped to #2 in our list of favorite Italian eats. I think it's just the "hidden" location that keeps the crowds from finding out about this place (Giovanni's), but for now I'm ok with not having to share.

A "perfect" Saturday in DC

Yesterday was very relaxing and perfect in a DC sightseeing sort-of way. Jeremy's parents escaped the snow, and brought some friends for Summy (although it was more a game of hide from the scary hyper black doggy).

We started the afternoon with a stroll over to 14th St to check out the Adamson Gallery's Sartorialist's exhibit. We also went next door to see the garbage bag (?) sculpture exhibit. Pretty interesting.

Then we walked down to the Museum of Natural History to see their Nature's Best 2007 Photography International Awards Exhibit. So very amazing. I loved the African wildlife pictures, and this especially made me want to start planning our dream visit to the Serengeti. The photography exhibit has about 60+ pictures ranging from Macros of Iguana eyes to fantastic scenery of glaciers and polar bears, as well as breathtaking rock formations in Alaska and Nevada. The coolest part for the photography enthusiasts is that all equipment is listed with each picture, and the settings are also included. Way cool!

On our way out we strolled past the Hope Diamond, in case Jeremy needs a little inspiration for my bday gift ;)

We topped the night off with some appetizers and liter(s) of house wine at West End Bistro (an absolute neighborhood favorite!). We can't get enough of their fish burgers, pork pies, and grilled shrimp quinoa salad. This was our second time trying to get a table there, and because they were full for the night we (again) sat at the bar...but no complaints, that menu is super tasty!

I'm so glad I stumbled on this new release while in Rome's airport. It looks like I got the British release too, because some of the wording makes it clear and the cover is different. Lucky me, a quick read on the flight home. A must read for all you Shopaholic (and the like) fans!

Yesterday was a little rough on the liver (Virginia Wines Showcase all day).

I decided to lay low today thanks to J and friends playing Rockband until 6am. me so sleepy :(

I've been running a low fever for the past two days and sneezing and coughing like it's my job. As far as health goes, I don't really mean to complain since in the grand scheme of life I'll take this cold any day over the pain of falling off a mountain bike with no doctor for miles, or a real physical ailment.

FYI, I act like I'm at most 9 years old when I'm sick. I want to lay in bed all day, eat homemade chicken soup, and wake up 3 days later feeling all better. I also have a low tolerance for "things gone wrong" (like losing something, forgetting something else, etc.). Combining the two is a recipe for disaster.

Where's this going?

I got off the metro all rushed because I was working up until the last minute and quickly scrambling to pack my work notebook in my purse tonight. I had that feeling (that I have anytime I carry too much) that I had left something on that train. I always have this feeling about planes, hotel rooms, rental cars...and usually it's a mental thing. OCD perhaps? Anyway, I felt compelled to get back on the same train car to check, and right where I had been sitting was a smiling woman holding out these babies.

These were a Christmas gift from my sister when I first moved out to the freezing East Coast. I wear them just about everyday between Nov 1 and Feb 1 each year. For obvious they're so cute but more so sentimental reasons, I seriously would have been heartbroken and just broken down crying upon realizing I left these on the stupid metro. So I'm glad my intuition told me to jump back on the train and ride out an extra stop and back :)

I seriously feel like I won the lottery or something, just because I can't stand losing things...and I don't believe you can replace things that have huge sentimental value (it's in my genes, my dad can buy a new computer each week but I was touched to hear he hadn't replaced his 4 year old UGG slippers because despite how paper-thin they had gotten, they were a Christmas gift from me...aww!)

So a long post to thank random blonde smiling girl on metro who made me forget about how exhausted and sick I'm feeling and reminded me of happy things like my family :)

Rumors are running wild, but confirmations are starting to roll in...YAY!
The MacBook Airs have started to ship (and mine is still sitting there, ack!), slowly but surely it will make its way into my eager hands. Rumors also say that since the first batch of orders will be fulfilled by Friday, the stores will have these babies by the weekend. Grumble grumble, where's mine Mr. FedEx? (ya, I know...not really something to complain about but I'm excited!)

I'm selling a boatload of never-used fashion overindulgences on eBay and the auctions end tomorrow. Gotta love the influx of "intelligent" questions from potential buyers: "can u except a money order even though you only accept paypal?", "your listing says you don't ship internationally, but can you ship to Australia?" Ummm, that's all a resounding NO people. I mean really, it's hard enough to part with this stuff and now you expect me to break my established guidelines for your misspelled request? Ha!
Then I'm wondering will this stuff even sell? (only 1 item has met the reserve, doat!--maybe I should bend the rules) I hope I can make enough to fund some more pilates personal training or will I make just barely enough to buy a bottle of wine at next week's (dedicated post to come) wine festival?

and since my Gocco's instructions are in Japanese and I have a fever (= my brain is worthless tonight), I instead whipped out the camera to annoy my little Summy:) **note her ever present "babies": her weiner dog/monkey and her squeaker tennis ball

But I can't wait to figure out my Gocco and start making stuffs :)
